What Kind of Fruit?

In yesterday’s devotional, we saw the need for believers—as branches—to bear fruit. Most importantly, we discovered that the branches’ responsibility is to stay attached to the Vine and allow His life to flow through them. (John 15:4–5) The branches don’t have to struggle to produce fruit. In fact, the branches bear fruit that the true Vine produces.

We also discussed branches that are connected to the Vine, yet not bearing fruit. Drawing from viticultural practices of the day, Jesus taught us that these branches may need to mature or need some TLC, including being lifted up and secured to a trellis so that they returned to their natural fruit-bearing state.

One point I failed to mention, however: What kind of fruit should we expect the branches to bear?

We’ll go into more detail when we get to Galatians 5 on June 8. For now, though, let’s just say that there’s always some spiritual fruit that we should expect to see on branches connected to the Vine.

“What kind of spiritual fruit?” you ask. Paul tells us in Galatians 5:22–23 that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

In other words, as we stay close to Jesus and clean in our walk with Him, that process develops Christlike character in us over time. If fruit is not developing over time, then something is wrong. And, it’s important to inspect the fruit and the branches from time to time.

As we remain in union and communion with the true Vine, our lives will change from the inside-out.
